NUGAS - Culture and commitment
The National NUGAS Annual General Meeting was successfully held in Sydney on the 22nd of August, 2010. It was well-attended by Greek-Australian Tertiary Students from around Australia. Students from across Australia (NSW, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia) came together in a spirit of cooperation and enthusiasm. A commitment to the preservation and development of our Greek-Australian heritage was a focus for all discussions. In keeping with NUGAS protocol, Elinah Ioannidis and Harry Mavrolefteros (past national presidents) were awarded life memberships, in recognition of their tireless efforts and conviction to NUGAS’ ideals.
The newly elected National NUGAS executive council is as follows;
President – Lex Georgiou
Secretary – Mary Kousvos
Treasurer – Jonathan Pavlos
Media Officer – Natolé Jasonides
Liaison Officer – Lianna Georges
International Liaison Officer – Michael Christodoulides
Education Officer – Chris Macheras
Policy Officer – Panda Taktikos
Webmaster – Alexi Andronis
Activities Officer – Konnie Rapassanis
The newly appointed committee will continue to be proactive in the issue of Modern Greek Education, which is currently under threat. The council will also strive to maintain friendship and association between NUGAS state Councils, National and other Greek Youth Organisations. The committee voted for the continued endorsement of the publication of ‘Hermes’ – the National NUGAS newsletter outlining the current events throughout NUGAS affiliated societies and state bodies from the entire country. This term is set to be challenging yet rewarding. A more coordinated approach to cementing and expanding the NUGAS Alumni involvement will be a focal point as NUGAS approaches its half century. Finally, NUGAS affiliate clubs, state and national activities will be promoted throughout Australia, so as to attract wider participation and awareness.
NUGAS is proud to announce that this year marks its 40 year anniversary. The union is in fact the longest active national Greek body in all of Australia. To commemorate this milestone, NUGAS will be holding a Gala event on the 5th of December at Melbourne’s prime venue, ‘The Peninsula’ at the Docklands. The recently elected national executive NUGAS council would like to wholeheartedly express its gratitude to the immediate past office bearers for their hard work in actively promoting the NUGAS aims and objectives. The current council, who share the same passion and determination, will ensure that Greek-Australians are well represented so that the voices of young Greek students are heard.
