NUGAS Press Release – UNSW

Greek Department

It has come to the attention of the National Union of Greek Australian Students (NUGAS) that the University of New South Wales is acting to close its long standing Greek Department. As part of NUGAS’ charter to promote and maintain Greek culture and heritage throughout Greek students and youth within Australia, the National Union, and the representative states which form the National organisation offer their full support to the Greek Department of UNSW, and to the UNSW Hellenic Society which seeks to maintain students’ ability to study Modern Greek at UNSW.

Prior to 1995 Modern Greek was taught at UNSW on a non-permanent basis through the financial support of the UNSW Hellenic Society (Hellsoc) and the Greek Orthodox Community of Sydney. In 1995 an amount in excess of $250,000 was raised, which was matched dollar for dollar by the university, to fund the Greek Department, and an agreement was reached with the then Vice-Chancellor John Niland that Greek language was to become a permanent part of the curriculum at UNSW, provided that there was a demand for the course.

More recently in 2007, due to a decline in enrolments, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University decided that Greek will no longer be offered as a Major at the University and only be provided as a Minor. After the resignation of Dr Eleni Amvrazi, as head of the Greek Department at the University (serving for  over 10 years) the Dean of the UNSW Arts Faculty informed students that the department would be closing, and no further enrolments would be excepted for the study of Modern Greek at UNSW as of 2010.

Aside of courses purely teaching Modern Greek language, the UNSW Greek Department also offered courses on Greek Mythology, Modern Greek History and Greek film, theatre and music, which were widely popular amongst students, some having classes with in excess of 100 students. These courses are now either no longer offered, or are offered in a limited capacity by the university, which further adds to the University’s difficulty in maintaining a student interest in Modern Greek Studies.

It appears that the decision to close the Greek Department is not an economic one, as funding still exists from the money raised in 1995, and many of the teachers’ wages are paid by the Greek government, which has consequently offered to send more teachers if the department requires it.

Since the teaching of language and culture is without a doubt one of the most important factors in the continuation of the Greek Australian identity, the National Union of Greek Australian Students feels that it is imperative for the Greek department at the University of New South Wales to remain open. NUGAS will therefore act in any capacity it can to support the Greek department at UNSW, and any students wishing to study Greek at the university.

You may have noticed last week we (hopefully unobtusively) added in a NUGAS Events calendar to the right hand side of the site. For now, we've decided to move it up into the advertisment section of the site, while we work out some kinks in getting it to fit the panel to the right (or left - our website designers haven't really decided yet, but they'll figure it out). So for now, enjoy the NUGAS Events Calendar at the top of your screen!

NUGAS Adds New Policy PDF Print E-mail

NUGAS has ratified and added a new Policy, relating to International Hellenism. The policy, written by Jack Miriklis before his departure as National President, discusses International Hellenism, what NUGAS as an organisation will be doing to increase awareness and information sharing of Hellenism worldwide. It also discusses the setting of an international Federation of Greek Students.

This policy has been accepted, and as such, required an amendment to the National Constitution to incorporate an International Liaison Officer.

See the Policy Page to read the new policy, and comment on it in our forums.

In response to some requests, NUGAS has added back in an old section of its site!

Please be slightly patient with us, as we receive the outcome of AGM's being held across the country, but in a few days you can now find out what universities around Australia NUGAS is present at, along with a list of Executive Members that are currently managing the Union. It's broken up by State, so its easy to go in and see if NUGAS is at your campus - if there isn't one, we're always on the lookout for people who are interested to set one up!

Yesterday the United Nations announced that former Foregin Minister Alexander Downer has been formally appointed to a position in Cyprus after his retirement from politics earlier this month.

NUGAS welcomes this appointment of Alexander Downer to the post as the United Nation's special envoy for Cyprus and feels that the Cyprus issue is one of the most important issues all governments should help resolve. We feel that the appointment of Alexander Downer is beneficial to the Cypriot cause, and that he will be a benefical asset to Cyprus.

We hope that the former foreign minister much success in his new career, and look forward to reconcilliation in Cyprus.

NUGAS Attends Australian Hellenic Conference PDF Print E-mail

Sunday, 22 June 2008 15:01

On Sunday and Monday, NUGAS National President Jack Miriklis and National Secretary Peter Doukas represented NUGAS at the Australian Hellenic Council Conference in Canberra.

NUGAS and the AHC discussed many issues such as the illegal occupation of Cyprus, a resolution to the naming issue between Greece and Skopje, the lack of Greek language programming on SBS as well as the ways to promote and raise awareness on studying Greek in all levels of schooling.

The meeting was attended by various Greek organisations around Australia, as well as the High Commissioner of Cyprus and the Greek Ambassador to Australia. A reception and dinner was held for the delegates by the Greek Ambassador at his official residence, where many got the chance to discuss in detail with both the High Commissioner and the Ambassador concerns and ambitions of their respective organisations, as well as official Government policies of both nations relating to the issues raised in the meeting.

The Monday was taken up with all delegates going to Parliament House, to lobby politicians of both major parties on the issues raised in the meeting. Both parties were highly interested in helping the Greek community, with many MPs such as Petro Georgiou of Kooyong (Lib, Vic) and Steve Georganas of Hindmarsh (ALP, SA) promising to delve deeply into these matters and to raise our concerns both within their parties as well as in parliament.

Both Labor and Liberal leaders such as Dr. Brendan Nelson (Lib) and Stephen Conroy (ALP) expressed their desire for a peaceful resolution to the Macedonia question, and stated that their policy relating to the issue is that both the Australian Government and the Opposition will continue to call the country by its UN-designated provisional reference of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) until Athens and Skopje can reach a mutual agreement on the dispute.

NUGAS looks forward to working and meeting with the Government and the Opposition in the future on issues important to Greek-Australian students, and also thanks and applauds its fellow members in the Greek community who came together to lobby for issues of importance and relevance to everyone in the Greek community.
